The FrontLilies are in bloom.
Date: 07/22/2006
You can't see it well, but the rosebushes by the lampost are going nuts with their second wave of blooms. Though the lilies are almost halfway finished, you can still smell them from the parking lot. The black-eyed susans have kicked in too.
The Back
Date: 07/22/2006
Both far beds of the back garden. You can see the spikes of the delphinium (drat! it was supposed to be a royal blue!), the black-eyed susans, and the white David phlox by the fence.
Gloire de DijonClimbing rose, finally blooming
Date: 07/22/2006
The Gloire de Dijon climbing rose (behind a pile of nasturtiums) is finally getting into the swing of things, pumping out blossoms and growing about a half inch a day, it seems. Wicked thorns, but oh, what a scent! I can't wait to see how it grows next year... and the year after that... and the year after that.... :)
Dogwood Bed
Date: 07/22/2006
Lilies are in bloom out back, too, plus white and purple phlox. Those bushy, old-fashioned marigolds are great. Josh has a red-and-yellow lantana on the right, behind the nasturtiums.
Skippy! The newest addition to our family.
Date: 07/22/2006
I found Skippy on the fourth of July. He's a Painted Turtle and will eat out of my hand.

DinnerA grasshopper on the lilies.
Date: 07/16/2006
He held still for about half an hour as we took pictures of him, splayed in space like a ballerina.
Crocosmia
Date: 06/30/2006
I think the crocosmia might be my favorite flower in the garden, even more than the roses. A close runner-up, at least, to the lilies. I love their crayon color.

Josh took this one. It'd make a good desktop image.
Asian LilyA yellow Asian lily behind purple salvia.
Date: 06/25/2006
Everything in the garden looks so much more purposeful when you take little closeups - maybe because you can't see how jumble-tumble the rest of it is! :)

I think my Sweet 100 tomato is trying to best Audrey 2. It keeps on growing and growing: it's already 5 feet tall in June!

Raindrops all over my lacy Bronze Fennel after a thunderstorm. It looks almost like an intricate, rain-covered spiderweb.

Front entranceThe daylilies are in bloom in front!
Date: 06/06/2006
Stella d'oro daylilies: they'll keep blooming throughout the summer. Asian lilies tower behind them on the right; on the left is a "Sky Pencil" holly. I've dug a little rose bed up by the lamp-post, with a "Felicia" rose, a "Glamis Castle" rose, two "May Night" Salvia. The pale chartreuse blooms of the euphorbia look great against the dark purple salvia. (Did you know that Euphorbia's common name is "Spurge"? I dare you to try and come up with an uglier name!)
Back in bloomThe back garden, starting to bloom and fill out.
Date: 06/06/2006
Everything's starting to fill out a bit more, though there's still empty-ish patches here and there. The daylilies are in bloom. I love the way the variegated iris (lower right corner) stands out against the rest of the green.
I made every single pot in my garden. :)
Dogwood Bed. Taken from inside the veggie patch.

I love the cottage-y look of this photo; it shows the careful juxtaposition of contrasting textures and forms. In the background you can see the trunk of one birch, and to the left is the lilac bed.

Keeping an eye outButter and Kitty love to watch me garden.
Date: 06/06/2006
They love to look out the screen door; we call it "Cat TV". We've thought about taking them out on the patio on leashes or something, but we don't want them to get fleas.... or get used to going outside (right now they're scared of it and won't approach the door).
You can see the planter full of lobelia next to them. I hope it will grow up and spill all over the place. :)
Black Knight Caladium
Date: 06/06/2006
The "Black Knight" caladium in our fountain sends up leaves that open dark red and become matte purple-black with age. I caught the afternoon sunlight shining through the leaves, tinting them with copper and garnet.
FoliageJuxtaposing textures.
Date: 06/06/2006
I love the way plant textures can compliment each other as they contrast; the broad saucers of the nasturtiums, the strong lines of the "Brilliant" fern, and the feathery leaves of the "Moonlight" coreopsis.

It's starting to look more like a cottage garden: colors and textures jostled and jumbled together. It's harder than you'd think to achieve that artful untidiness.

Frontal beginningsHalf the front torn out....
Date: 07/26/2004
I'd torn out the 6-foot-tall euonymus, but not the junipers or azaleas. Those I'd leave till the following year. I'd tilled up the bed, but still had to put in the edging, not to metion the plants...
